Help Sanctuary Cafe Close Debt-Free

Business as usual at Sanctuary Cafe closed on June 15.

Many people have asked about whether Sanctuary Cafe has found its new location. Our response to them has been: We first have to focus our energy on exiting the current space as safely and peaceably as possible, and we have to seek to break-even before we can begin our next venture.

Martin, our founder, began Sanctuary Cafe in 2017 with a loan of $15,000, and continued to pour funds in when business was slow-growing yet the fair-wage staff had doubled. Martin then assumed the role of Chef, working over 70 hours per week, without taking a consistent salary.

In the closure of Sanctuary Cafe, all employees have been paid their final wages, but, due to the forced closure, several vendors, legal fees and other costs have not been covered.

Martin is not only being named personally in the eviction by University Church but, due to the forced closure, has no way of receiving the loan proceeds, or making these necessary final payments. If this remains, Sanctuary Cafe has no chance of moving elsewhere.

We ask the community to support the safe and peaceable closing of the current operation of Sanctuary Cafe through this online campaign, or during our final fundraising hours inside Sanctuary Cafe (listed below).

We will make and bake everything we have in-house using a Pay-What-You-Want model for donations. We will listen to good music and tell good stories — we will celebrate the successes of this community from inside the kitchen to the life of the customer. Finally, in these last fundraising hours, we will support Martin financially to make these final necessary payments and regain his initial investment.

If the story of Sanctuary Cafe has any chance to be continued: we first have to focus our energy on exiting the current space as safely and peaceably as possible, and we have to seek to break-even before we can begin our next venture.

Will you help us?
